What I love about this early videogame case is the novelty of the encounter between law and video games: how the court struggles with the new medium, what things it feels the need to scare-quote, and how it compares the creative expression. After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Someone asked why humanities research got left out, and we had to say that we couldn't find it to be directly relevant on our top 10 list of bulleted points. Ian made the point, and I agreed, that doing the research for this panel made us think differently about academic research. While I'm not going to say that what we've done personally has no value, it was a definite challenge to try and make it *directly relevant* in a BULLETED POINT for developers.

So does this "deep game" require a lifetime to master? Yes and no. It does in the sense that you have to have played two or more of the commercial virtual worlds that have come out since Meridan 59 to understand where the opportunities for this kind of play are likely to exist, and more importantly, how to protect knowledge about these kinds of discoveries for as long as possible while also being knowledgeable about what kinds of discoveries may trigger designer intervention and even designer punishment, relative to the established behavior of a given developer. (E.g., in the first Asheron's Call, you could pretty much try and get away with anything without fear that the developers would punish you for it, whereas Blizzard is known to crack down fairly hard on players discovering unforeseen or emergent aspects of the gameworld in many cases.)

They should create a buyer beware sign for any Warhammer Online leveling guide that came out before the open beta was released early September of 2008, because those guides are of poor, poor value, and anyone purchasing one is going to get an inferior guide.

I have a lot of interests and hobbies, and playing online games is one of them. I have played EQ2, in particular, for a few years now and it took me a long time to acquire any EQ2 Gold at first, since I was learning the game and making money the slow way.
